Engage
Overview
ENGAGE is a play-based therapeutic model delivered in whaanau homes to support the emotional and behavioural development of preschool-aged tamariki. The approach focuses on strengthening attachment, building emotional literacy, and supporting self-regulation through intentional play. Delivered by trusted health professionals already engaged with the whaanau (e.g., through Start Well), the programme offers support in a familiar and culturally safe setting, free from the barriers that often accompany clinic-based interventions. ENGAGE recognises the healing potential in everyday whaanau moments — and harnesses the power of play to connect, stabilise, and grow.
Key Practice Elements
Delivered at home, within the whaanau’s natural environment.
Facilitated through trusted relationships, not formal referrals.
Play is central — used to support emotional literacy, behaviour, and bonding.
Parent–child interaction is prioritised, with tamariki supported to learn self-regulation.
Culturally responsive, adaptive to the whaanau’s rhythms and routines.
Whaanau-Centred Strengths
Tamariki are supported without stigma or clinical labels.
Whaanau retain control over how and when the support is delivered.
Enhances parent confidence, reduces whaanau stress, and fosters tamariki joy.
Builds skills that last beyond the duration of the programme.
“It’s simple stuff. It’s fun. But it makes a huge difference — we see our kids change.”
